Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef

The Cairns marina is home to a fleet which consists of quite a few pretty incredible dive vessels. The newest member in the fleet is the Seastar, only just unveiled this past month.

This unique amazing cutting edge vessel is ninety feet long, and would make the trip out to Seastar’s scuba dive sites in under an hour or so. The boat is definitely fast and also safe, along with tons of shaded and air-conditioned cabin open area.

Seastar Cruises also has constantly prided themselves on providing an extremely exclusive and personal adventure, and they may be changing their procedures to be able to improve the small group experiences that they have generally supplied.

Most people really like the particular basic fact that their company owners restrict the actual numbers on board to exactly 40 persons, certainly under the actual capacity of the charter boat; which would mean that there can be a lot of breathing space on board. Using a speedier boat they can certainly abandon a little less earlier, however , still be typically the first vessel to see Michaelmas Cay, so snorkelers and birdwatchers have got it all to themselves. This journey is unquestionably the A-list cruise with regards to birdwatchers that really want to blend an awesome reef experience which includes an opportunity to view tropical seabird varieties.

A nice a lot faster cruise out also will mean extra time can easily possibly be spent at Michaelmas Cay combined with Seastar’s different dive mooring on Hastings Reef; customers can right now spend more than five hours out at the reef.

Most of the Great Barrier Reef is distinctive in several ways, and one can be that it is usually often the winter the place to find the only well-known white whale in existence.

The whale, a particular 20-year-old Humpback whale nicknamed “Migaloo”, which translates to white fellow in a regional aboriginal dialect, devotes his summers eating around Antarctica, then the majority of years migrates northward towards the winter calving and mating grounds on the north Great Barrier Reef.

Migaloo was only identified off Port Douglas last weekend, the earliest sighting of this one-of-a-kind whale ever since his migration southward towards Antarctica last year.

Just simply the spotting of that one-of-a-kind whale is actually huge news around Cairns. The Cairns Guide, our regional paper, ran some sort of cover story on the sighting, which include both some sort of first page picture as well as an inside fold out poster.

This isn’t exactly the only region in which this excellent whale has an impact, as witnessed by the following stories that also highlighted Migaloo these previous months:

In July Migaloo ended up being a poster guy involving (blank) a collection of protests against the armed service coaching exercise near Shoalwater Bay, found in the central district of the Great Barrier Reef. These kinds of exercises were jointly conducted by the American and Aussie armed forces forces. Protesters were worried that the high intensity sonar that might be now a characteristic of this kind of activities would harm whale populations, and this includes Migaloo. There does indeed seem to be high-quality evidence connecting sea mammal deaths by using this kind of sonar, and because of the debate it seems bizarre that the training would be planned through an acknowledged whale migration course at a time while whales tend to be about.

Also this season, there was clearly a conflict when a nearby individual profitably trademarked the word “migaloo”. Even though some media accounts pictured the owner of the trademark like a man that wanted to use the trademark as a means of raising funds to conserve whales, some others felt that a business oriented invasion upon nature and aboriginal tradition.

Miglaoo of course has made it onto You tube., which suggests he’s obtained superstar reputation that rivals Paris Hilton plus Lindsay Lohan. We have yet to take a look Facebook . com or Myspace . com regarding Migaloo’s profile, however it’s without doubt in the event that he’s got a webpage, he’s got a lot of friends!

Some Info About The Barrier Reef

The Barrier Reef is one of the natural wonders of the world running from the northern point of the country to just north of Brisbane. It’s coral reefs stretch over 2000km along the countries coast.

The reef is home to well over 900 fish varieties, dolphins, turtles. An impressive amount of seabirds make their home in the area.

The coral which creates the reef itself is also a living creature, made up of 1000′s of tiny creatures. When it dies it turns white, and forms the basis for more coral growth. Well, I Recently Bought A Seakayak

Nine years after being hired by a sea kayak touring and sales company I’ve finally got around to buying myself one. I have spent the last seven years paddling the areas rivers in an older style white water kayak, but this just wasn’t suitable for the coastal zones.
This was getting extremely frustrating as I live a quarter mile from the beach at Clifton Beach, a coastal suburb just north of Cairns .
I’d already paddled the Russell River numerous times, the Upper Barron River was getting a bit repetitive as well, so I had to get into that ocean.
As Cairns is a small country center the purchase of a seakayak and the assorted accessories is not the most simple task. You can either go with Ebay, wait for someone to sell it in the paper or just work with what you can find local.
Thats what I did. I made the most of what I could find, with the notion of then turning it into what I want. I purchased a fairly affordable imported boat brand new. Now I knew that the fittings would be cheap, I also knew it probably wouldn’t be 100% watertight. Luckily I was enjoyably surprised.
The only fittings that will need changing are the elastic cord deck ropes and elastic cord steering lines. I may substitute the internal steering lines with stainless wire as needs be.
As for kitting out the seakayak with emergency gear my list is as follows
* V Flag for attratring attention
* Emergency tool containing whistle, small compass, match striker, signalling mirror and small watertight storage for matches.
* Distress flares
* surplus paddle (cut into 3 sections for storage)
* Another signalling mirror ( I don’t desire only having one of anything that sinks)
* 3 x 1.5 liter containers of water
* 6 snap flouro light sticks
* compact 1st aid kit
* thermal blanket

I already own some nautical charts as I’m a sailer, but I figure I’ll just copy relevant sections and laminate the smaller sheets. I have a compass ready to be fitted as well as plans to make myself a small emergency bilge pump. The bilge pump is more a luxury, this can be done with a hand pump or sponges but I figure that if I do manage to flood the kayak it will be in some rough seas so I don’t want to remove the spray skirt to stuff around with a hand pump or bailers. Much better to just snap a switch and let the pump go for it.

The expeditions I have planned in the immediate future to test everything out are Green Island, Fitzroy Island for the Fitzroy Island New Years Eve Party, Low Isles Dunk Island and Snapper Island.

In the future I plan to do the Hinchinbrook channel and paddle all the way the island. This is all leading up to the big expedition of Great Barrier Reef. I can fit approximately 100 pounds of camping gear and supplies without becoming too unseaworthy, so this should get me where I want to go. And I can sometimes tow a trolling line to supplement my regular freeze dried diet with some fresh fish. I’ll also be stopping and camping so the barramundi gear will get a good work out too.

Scuba Diving in Thailand

Thailands geographical area is divided into four components:

The mountains and forests are in the north. You could discover thrilling handicrafts and multicolored orchids.

The central part where you’ll discover paddy field, farms and all forms of fruits.The northeast plateau is famous for its rich archaeological and anthropological heritage.You will discover tropical islands in the southern peninsula. The people on this area are involved in fishing, rubber cultivation and tin mining.

The people of Thailand are remarkably pleasant and hospitable. This area is rich in monumental heritage and noted for its beaches.

Scuba diving is by far the largest attraction on Ko Tao, and it’s easy, exciting, and you’ll view lots of fish, perhaps even turtles, stingrays, barracuda, reef sharks, and even a whale shark if you get lucky
You will get good diving weather conditions on Koh Tao apart from November, when the sea is choppy, and visibility is poorer than normal. The visibility could possibly be over 40 metres throughout the rest of the year.

You will learn lots of dive operators on the island, and some of them provide you with lodging. Just beware that when you read the lodging is free, its not actually, considering that they will offer you discounts if you stay somewhere else.

The Gulf of Thailand includes hundreds of islands on its 1,840km (1,143 miles) long coast. The gulf is a shallow bowl shaped body of water separated from the South China Sea as a result of a pair of underwater ridges that extend from Vietnam on 1 aspect and Malaysia to the other.

The sea bed bottom right here is generally mud combined with sand and shells. Corals are commonly discovered around the fringes of the gulf islands. There are numerous rivers in the north bringing ample sediment and freshwater to inhibit coral development except to the south or the eastern aspect of the Gulf of Thailand.

The underwater scenery in the gulf is perhaps not as visually appealing as those of the Andaman Sea as it contains somewhat less variety of marine life. Marine parks such as the Ang Thong Marine Park contain spectacularly shaped limestone islands with lush rainforest covering them and many of such islands are in reality uninhabited.

Similan, Thailand – Mu Koh Similan National Park has been rated first by the U. S. publication Skin Diving of the leading 10 dive destinations in the world. The Similan Islands in the heart of the Andaman Sea are certainly unparelled in their exotic splendor. If planning a visit, keep in mind that anytime in between December to April is highly recommended, with the ideal month being March, mainly because the monsoons are over and the water is clear.

Similan is literally the Malaysian phrase for nine, as there are nine islands in the Similan group: Kohh Bangu, Koh Similan, Hin Huwagralok, Koh Payu, Koh Ha, Kohh Hok, Kohh Miang, Kohh Payan, Kohh Payang, and Kohh Huyong.

Shark Ridge Rocks are pinnacle rocks near Kohh Payan or Kohh Sam. Here, many species of sharks like Silvertip, Leopard Shark, and Reef White tip can be found.

Hope this information assists you to have terrific diving experience in Thailand.

Australians Have A Funny Idea Of Humour

People in Australia like to reassure visitors about the safety of the wildlife and landscape whilst at the exact same time warning of its deadliness. It comes out sounding funny, leaving you unsure whether you should be relaxed or worried for your life. Some Variations I have heard:

“Don’t worry while you’re snorkeling: reef sharks are pretty harmless. Unless you get between them and food”

“Don’t Worry There’s no sharks there………….the crocodiles finished them off”

“You’ll be OK if you stay inside the stinger net, apart from the Irukandji’s, they’re small enough to get through.

“Spiders? Ah, spiders won’t hurt you! They don’t even bite. Well, except for that one. But otherwise, don’t worry

“Hold this snake! It might bite, but it doesn’t look poisonous, so that’s okay.”

“No-ones ever been left behind while diving on the Great Barrier Reef, except that American couple, but they faked it.”

“Cairns is a safe city……………..just don’t walk alone at night.

“Kangaroos can’t hurt you. Well, unless they rear up. Then you’re pretty much dog food.”

Oh, and did you know that koalas, despite their looks, aren’t the most cute and cuddly creatures. They can in fact get pretty nasty, which is why it’s more difficult than you might think to find a place that will let you pick them up.

I will either leave Australia with a healthy respect for animals or with plenty of food for nightmares. Though seeing as how I have already gone swimming with reef sharks, stingrays and crocodiles, I think I’ll be okay. I even enjoy holding snakes, though I do insist on guarantees that it won’t bite me, even in a non-fatal way. Spiders are where I draw the line. I’m fairly certain my arachnophobia is permanent, and I’ve no plans to change in that respect.
